The magnificent route over Hartside forms part of this tour, after exploring the Eden Valley north of Penrith.

Set out on the A686 and turn off to follow the west bank of the Eden through Great Salkeld to Lazonby. Then cross the Eden to Kirkoswald and after visiting Irene Sanderson’s studio head for Renwick and Gamblesby.

Cut back to the A686 and over Hartside towards Alston but turning right for Garrigill. From Garrigill head for Alston, the highest Market Town in England with its cobbled streets, but turn right up one of the steepest parts of the C2C cycle route to the crossroads on the B6277, and head south for a mile to Ashgill. Then, return to the crossroads, turn right and continue up and over Flinty Fell to Nenthead, then left again to Alston before returning over Hartside and its spectacular view of the Eden Valley.

Before reaching Langwathby turn right through Winskill with an opportunity to visit the stone circle, Long Meg and her Daughters, near Little Salkeld.
