Follow the A6 south from Penrith, over Eamont Bridge and turn right towards Pooley Bridge where the road goes between two ancient earthworks.

After Pooley Bridge, drive along the shores of Ullswater before heading back towards Penrith on the A592 turning off this road to Dacre continuing on to join the A66 heading towards Keswick. Soon you have an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views of Blencathra on the way to Threlkeld. Retrace your steps a little and then follow the lanes along the edge of the Northern Fells through Mungrisdale towards Haltcliffe Bridge where the River Caldew disappears underground in dry weather. Return to Penrith using the B5305 and the M6.
